i read somewhere that it was beneficial to all the little critters in there, is this valid?

I don't directly feed. But, I don't use any mechanical/chemical filtration that would stop food from getting to it.

it helps feed the main tank, i have a line from the main pump that goes back to the sump to stir the bottom.
