Marlin65 is on a roll

Default Two bulbs or one

I am in the proses of setting up a new tank it is 24" wide 24" long and will probably end up with around 24" of water depth.
About 8 cubes 60 gal
I have two 175 watt lights 20,000K each.
Wondering if two might be too much and if I should just put one in.
I am looking at putting spp in this tank and am not too concerned about the heat, more about the light intensity.
Watt wise I guess I am at about 6 watts per gallon with both.
Some in-site on this would be great.

mh's recommended footprint is 2x2. @ 24" on a 60g, 1-400w mh with 2-65w pc would be 8.9w/g. or 2-250w mh with 2-65w pc would be 10.5w/g. either will work for sps.

just one little sps frag tank with lots of goodies

I just noticed I put 8 watts.
That should of read 6 watts or almost 6

Am I okay with 6 watts or is this to low for sps?
I was more worried about the K rating and the UVR being on the high side.
They are mogul base and shielded, but I was wondering if two was too much K.

The higher K means you will have lower light output, so I wouldn't worry about too much light if I were you! "too much K" just means it will be more in the UV range, and will give more blue appearance, but shouldn't harm anything. Good luck!

k value is basically color
7-10 w/gal is recommended for reef tanks but can get away with lower
mogul base bulbs dont need to be sheilded, hqi does
heres a website to help choose lights vs corals

Thanks guys that helps.
would it be worth my while to add some 150w MH to the hood.
I happen to have two of those as well or should I add some T5 lights.
I am going to put 2 T5 actinic in but maybe I should add some Whites as well?
Or is what I have close enough as long as I keep the sps close to the top?
