| What Skimmer Should I Get? I have a 90gal that needs a skimmer. I had a Seaclone 100, but a fitting broke. I have a canister filter so I would like a Hang on skimmer. The tank is visible from all sides so a discreet or good looking one would be nice. Quiet would be nice also. So I guess: Discreet, Quiet, hang on, and o yah, works really well. Any ideas?? Thanks for you help

| At the risk of sounding like I didn't read your post, do you have a sump?
I ask because an in-sump model, I feel, is safer. If it overflows, you're safe. If a HOB model malfunctions for any reason (like the collection cup overflowing during the 2 week break-in period, for example) you're in a world of flood-induced hurt.
I think that The Bullet is a good call, although since I don't own one, I don't know if it's hang on back ready. I've not heard of a HOB skimmer that people advocate here on this forum.

Nah, I agree. It isn't all that bad. If I could do it all over, though--I'd buy a $450 skimmer. In this hobby you generally get what you pay for. |

Heck, a rubbermaid bin would work, but most use acrylic or glass units made just for the purpose. I use an old wet/dry with the bio balls removed.
Put simply, it's a reservior under the main tank fed by an overflow; which contains a return pump to the aquarium. In this sump go your protein skimmer, phophate reactor, calcium reactor, you get the idea. It's just a place to put the necessary eyesores that you don't want seen in the main tank.
It adds water volume, which means that your entire system is more stable. Think, if someone dumps a martini in your 10 gallon tank. All is lost. If you add a sump of the same size, the impact is diminished by 50%. You can do the math from there.
Good luck. |

| The RED SEA Berlin Classic HOB will also work in a sump if and when the time comes.
