Skimmer Capacity

How can you determine what size tank your skimmer is good for. The vendors who sell there skimmers and say they will handle up 300g or 500g or whatever. How do they come up with that? I have a DIY skimmer from and old tank and I was wondering if there was a way to figure out what size tank or what water volume it would be good for.

Typically the manufacture specs the skimmer to tank size. Most are a little generous. but there is no way I know of to spec a DIY

I beleive that the size of the camber and the pump has to do with it. If you look at different size skimmers, you will notice the size of the skimmer and the size of the pump will vary. the bigger the pump, the more water it can move. As for diy skimmers............ My other skimmer I had was rated for a 75gal and it had a rio600 pump(600 g/h). the one that I have now is rated for a 150gal tank and it has a 2200(2972 l/hr) pump. Im assuming the 2200 means 2200 g/hr. hope this helps, Luna
