Again it depends on who you talk to. Some people say you HAVE to have them, old skool reefers say you dont need them. I used one until it started leaking, and havent used one since without any problems. I always test my water and until the move recently, everything has always tested perfect. However I do dose my tank with various elements that is fundamental to reef tanks.

What do you use for filtration now that your skimmer is gone?

power filters. I have always used power filters. If I told you all how I care for my tank, you all would freak but I have NEVER had a problem other when I moved my tank but I think that has equalled out now.

What do you think big aquariums use for filtration??? They sure as heck dont have a sump and they also dont do water changes. They have a HUGE filter and HUGE skimmer.

If you change them out regularly you wont have any problems, but if you dont, cotton/sponges/bio balls have a reverse effect on your tank.
