Yeah I did the DIY one too. I like the diffuser on this one though. Would work with either.

It sounds like it is working to me. It should start a bubble at the bottom that makes it's way up. The bubbles per second escapes me, but I think it's close to 1 every few seconds or so. Vacuum the heavy spots once a water change. You can stretch it out with growing plants a bit though.
