Default UVs~~A Question to The Experts

About UVs stererilizers.....I have a question to the experts: Is it safer to keep on ALL the time? or are they only used to solve problems like green water, parasites, etc?

The reason I"m asking, is because I recently purchased one to get rid of my thick green water, now my water is so clear, I can't believe there's water in the tank!...

Anyway, I thought I'd ask about the recommended usage of these UVs sterilizers. My main concern is whether this will kill the bacteria that gets rid of nitrites, etc....I add Seachem's stability everytime I do a water change, but I'm now wondering if the UV is killing that helpful bacteria.

Thanks!!

uv, ozone kills all bacteria good and bad. you dont have to run it all the time, some do. its recommended as a quick fix. i dont run either on my reef tank, never have.

if you're going to run a uv, the length of time you run it for depends on what you want to do. I run UV's 24/7 on FO on a separate low power pump if the tank has exposure to heavy lighting, direct sunlight, will be overcrowded. If it's a reef, I dont really use it. Kinda pointless on reefs imo. You can also set-it up to run for one week out of the month or for a few hrs per day on a timer.
