Temp Changes, Ok?

I just started my tank and it turns out my apartment is too hot for a heater in the tank. 75 Gallon 20 Gallon Sump.

I unplugged the heater to get the temp down, but now the temp changes all day, from 76 to 78, low in the morning and higher at night.
With the heater it stays at around 82 - 84 no matter what the settings.

Is this going to be a problem for my reef tank? I know that one degree can sometimes make a big difference. Plus I don't have my lights even on yet.


Please advise. I rather not have to buy a chiller.

You can rig up some PC fans to cool the water in your sump, or vent the air in your canopy (if you have one).

I don't have a canopy yet, and I won't for a while. My light system that I'll be getting has two fans.

I'm doing temp reading every 30 minutes to see what the cahanges are.

My main question is, is it bad for the reef life?

well right now since its "winter" ...los angeles my tank goes from about 74-5 in the morning to 78 at night, i wouldnt worry 2 much...but try to keep it steady

Well it's at 78.3 right now and has been for an hour or two.
I guess I'll have to make charts and graphs, fun fun!!!!

As long as the temp changes aren't drastic acouple degrees over the course of the day shouldn't be detrimental. Fans work well, also you could move the lights(metal halides) higher up above the tank.

I've pretty much got it all figured out now.
I'm staying at 77 - 78.
If it ever gets too hot I'm going to throw in a bag with ice in it. Not a large amount, I'll keep my eye on it.
