Question Somewhat confused

Can someone explain the refugium process to me. I've been to numerous websites and perused a few books, but can't find an answer that I can fully grasp. ie - How does it function as a filter? & How is a refugium constructed?
Is anything besides the fuge needed filtration wise? I've always used hang-on or canisters, so refugiums are completely new to me.

Fuge's are a good place to have Live Rock, Deep Sand Beds or Macro Algae. Or a combination of the above.
LR = basic biologic filtration
DSB = denitrification and aerobic biologic
Macro = reduction of nutrients, especially phosphates.

You can also grow pods, use it to isolate corals, inverts or other fish.

There is more, but that is a good start.

Arrow Will research

I only know of 2 right now: Aqua Oceans on Rt 9, Lakewood and Tropiquarium on Hwy 35 in Ocean twp. I haven't been to either lately. Since it's been years since I've had a marine aquarium, I'll be checking phone books and the net for retailers. Once I have a list I'll take a couple of daytrips. I will post the list of stores that sell reef equip, etc. as soon as I compile one. I'm hoping to get out the first weekend in March. Could someone from Jersey lend a hand?
