Default Slime film on surface of fuge water???

Evening everyone. Hope all is well with each of you.

My new fuge is up and running now. I guess 2+ weeks. I have 20lbs live sand, red gracilaria and chaetomorpha in it. I am noticing on the surface of the water that there is a slime type film on it. Not sure why this is. Is this a normal function of a fuge or is my fuge not working correctly. Sorry for the ignorance on this. Just want to make sure my design is working correctly. Within the slime film are hundreds of tin airbubbles trapped in the film. These I assume are from the skimmer and overflow into the fuge.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you again as always.

Todd

I was thinking that but always trust the advice given here instead of listening to myself.

Thanks Hottie.

i paniced too when that happened. thats what happens to all reefers from time to time. Its a lot of work to run and maintain and reef so when we see something different we sometimes panic.

So I have noticed...LOL

Everything takes time with this hobby as I am learning. The couple scares here and there have helped me learn a lot though. And of course everyone on here has helped tremendously. So thank you again everyone.

i agree. when i first started out i had a lot of mistakes but those helped me figure other things out and now to make the same mistake twice. This site has helped me a lot. I would of lost my mind and maybe my tank without this site. I would be lost without this site basically. I have dedicated all my sucess and advances with my reef tank to this site.

Ok then

I put a small powerhead in my fuge (but I don't have lots of macro yet, that may end up being a problem) to run my denitrator...it is pointed to agitate the water surface.

Another solution could be to put an airstone in the fuge...

Personally, I feel that is additional surface area for cooling and gas exchange and I did not like it looking so stagnant.

use something to break the surface tension of the water and agitate it, if the film is sever it can inhibit gas exchange and cause lots of porblems, but a very thin film that seperates with touch is completley normal in a tank without overflows or powerful water movemnet.
