I would go with chrisANDbarbs advice! A foot away seems like a good distance.

u guys are great! Like i said in the begining i have no idea what im getting into but i know its a lot of money and work. I want my tank to have a bluish tint and have mainly corals and a cuple fish that would work good with the corals. Any suggestion? I now have a wopping 6lbs of live rock(kinda broke seeing that it is winter and i am a painter!) but ill get their. ANd that light wing is cheap! thanks ima order one soon, and i can build a top that it can be inclosed in and hang it from the ceiling right above it! My main goal is to have it set up in my basement in the middle of the room so u can walk around the whole thing to look! sorry for talkin so much!

_________

Im new to this saltwater, but ill never give up on my favorite fresh water fish the Silver Arowana! RIP little buddy( he jumped to his death tanks to my carelessness) such a waste of $90 when u leave the top open!

Everything i have to use:
1 20gal tank

1 46 gal hex.
1 cascade 500 filter
1 milennium 1000 filter
1 55w compact flor.
1 400w metal halide lamp (dont know if it could be used or not)

In my opinion I would use the 46 as the saltwater and put the MH over that and run the 20 gallon as your sump tank then put some mangroves in your sump tank with the 55w and add some critters would make a great reef tank

Also I would put the milennium 1000 in the 46 till your mangrove plants got good and healthy and the filtering from them started taking place with the mangroves I've read that you shouldnt need a protien skimmer but thats your call
