Default Newbie Light question

So I have a light timer for my tank and was just woundering how long I should have the lights on. It's been awhile since I have been to the ocean so is it best to keep them on for 6 hours? Or 8? Or even 12? I do have some frags of both SPS and LPS. Any info would be great, thanks.

There are a few other parameters in lighting of a tank.
But you should time it really no more than 8 total hours, timed any longer and
certain types of algae (unwanted kinds mind you) can take a foot hold in the tank and very hard to control.
