Otty, like Tangster and I, started his tank with dead base rock and seeded it with one piece of live rock (or a cup of live sand) from a trusted source.

The only reason I would use live rock is for the bacteria.

I know some people do their own diy rock so I dont see a problem with it. And yes you save lots of benjamins using base rock in the star. Yeah it might not look awesome in the first 6 months but then cant tell the diffrence. Like otty says " Going fast is only good in drag racing not SW"

I re pipeed and re pumped and set up the 3,500 or 4,500 gallon mistake in a place in Va. And I filled it full of cinder blocks to build the base rock wall upon a tank 20 Ft long and 6 ft his and 4 or 5 ft wide takes a lot of rock (: Now the true measurements and gallonage of the tank is a distance memory now its been over a yr since I re worked it. Again all dead base rock.
