I cycled mine (30 gal) for 10 weeks before adding vertabrates.
Had some snails and shrimp in there after about 6 weeks...
You need to get a testing kit...reef master or something of the sort.
Be sure to get a grounding plug...very cheap and required.
also....where gloves when you can while handling "stuff"...better safe than sorry.
And take a little time and browse through some of the threads and stickies in this forum....you will find it to be a tremendous help.

Thanks, I have got the test kit and the grounded plug along with sealing up all the open slots. I'm at about the 7 week time frame of running so this weekend looks like a good time to add snails in.
