bioballs/ceramic rings

Hello everybody hope to get dome answers , i have a 12 gal dx nano. running for 3 weeks water is
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 0
ph 8.2
calcium 580
I heard lots of comments on removing the bio-balls and ceramic ring that came w/ it. because are a factory of nitrates?, also because i want my beneficial bacteria to develop on my LR and LS not on bio-balls. Does anybody have any info about this subject on nano cubes filter systems , please any advice will be very helpful.

I don't have any info but everyone I know that has a nano removes them.

FWIW, My 29 gal has a Wet/dry with bio-balls. I keep them clean and do regular water changes. I havn't had any nitrate problems. The tank is only around 6 months old now though.

According to the box info for 12 DX, and some other reefers it is a true wet/dry filter. also it said is activated carbon in there. so you are suggesting if i keep them clean it will be fine. where the beneficial bacteria will grow?

i would pull your ceramic and bio balls. as far as biological filtration, think of your LR as big bio balls. as far as carbon you can place it in the filter area. anyone else have a take on this?

Loose the bio balls as they are completley redundant in a Nano with lots of LR and LS.....i would replace them with mechanical or chemical filtration. Thats what i have done in mine.

If you are going to remove them make sure you do it a little at a time, so that the bacteria you are removeeing with them reseeds in the main tank, or you could run a period of time with out enough nitrification.
