Default Ammonia

Hi There
I am new to marine ,have got a 1 meter lenth tank, holds about 50 gallons i think, have been doing my water tests and all ok apart from the Ammonia test and i know this is important,my last reading was ,well we think its very close between 0.50 & 0.25,our tank has only been setup for a week, although its not a brand new setup and we did use the original water & have the same rocks & gravel though we have cleaned it all a bit and taken out some of the gravel.
have changed the filter to an external cannister one and also have a skimmer.
All i realy want to know is the best way to get the Ammonia level down as soon as possible as i am a bit worried about it.
Also can you by anything to put in the water to treat it.
Thanks
Charro

Charro,

The Ammonia level will come back down again naturally but there is a possibility that prolonged exposure could damage the fish. Do you know of anyone who could look after them for you for a few weeks?

If you can get them housed elsewhere it would be good, as you could then let the tank cycle properly without any possible harm to the fish.

What condition are the rocks and sand BTW?

John

No dont know anyone i could let look after the fish, the rocks are live rock but are about somethin like 7 year old,so i guess they will be dead now ?,they do have bristle worm in them though, its not gravel its crushed coral i think,i did give it a quick rinse before putting it back into the tank and thined it out a bit,who had it before me,his filteration was hardly working so i had to clean it a bit it was a right mess.
Thanks anyway.
o is there nothing i can buy to put in the tank to treat it..
