Would 250 watt MH's provide enough light at bottom of my175 gal tank (27" tall) or would the 400's be better?

I do not have a lot of space in my canopy if that factors into your advice..:)

lights are personal preference dependant on corals housed. a par meter will tell the truth on which bulb to use. i use aqualine AB

do you think i would be able to get by with 2 400 watt pendant lights in a 72" long tank or would it need three?

Depends mostly on what you plan to keep as far as corals and Tridacna's!!!
