Default Does anyone want to try something?

Hi,
Metal Gone is a mineral sold to remove heavy metal from water. With it and Chloradsorb, it would be not necessary to use RO water. I use it with succes in my 15 gallon reef tank. Today, this topic is not to talk about it's reall use and if it work or not.
Metal gone was actually made to do an other job: to kill green hair algae. For some reason, it has been put on the marcket for an other use.

I'm curious so I made my experiments. I have use about 5 oz of metal gone with one dose of Right Now Bacteria. Metal Gone is supose to remove what alga need to grow and then, Right Now Bacteria consume the the weakened algae. As I said, the product is not sold for that but I think it's worth the try.

Results: results are not quick. for 1 month, I made weekly 10% water change and waited. After that month, the green algae problem was gone. Since then, I allways keep a small quantity of Metal Gone in my filter.

I also made the experiment using Metal Gone salt water in my fresh water planted tank. What a mess. I should have thought that not only the algae would suffer but also the plants. One month later, most of my plants are death (even the java fern that is allmost impossible to kill!).

I am about to say it work really well to kill green hair algae. What I like is that there is no chemical involve in this. I would like to do some more experiment but unfortunatly I don't have any algae problem at this time (you only get them when you don't want them ).

So, I thought I could find some prople here who would like to give this a try. I don't want to make anyone buy something to make an experiment so I'll pay for the Metal Gone and Right Now Bacteria if someone is willing to pay for shipping. I don't want to spend to much on this so I will only give 8oz of Metal Gone plus 1 dose of right now bacteria to 2 person who have a small tank (20 gallon or less) with green algae problem.
This way we can compair our results and close that case.

So if anyone is interested just send me a PM

Here is a link to the product: Metal Gone - Mad Captain's Aquarium

Yeah for sure, if you need it to feed our friends, you have no problem with this algae. Natural control is certainly a good thing.

Iron is what's probably mainly being taken out (green algae thrives on it and so would your planted tanks). To do the experiment you also have to look out for things that would still push iron back in, (trace element dosing)

This may be a good product but I am seriously skeptical of any claim that it can replace RO water. There are SO many contaminants in our water that are NOT metal based. For example my water has organic phosphate in it. Not alot, but after a year or two it builds up in the tank.

Here are some of the organic (non-metal) compounds that are commonly found in drinking water as listed by the EPA:

Acrylamide
Alachlor
Atrazine
Benzene
Benzo(a)pyrene (PAHs)
Carbofuran
Carbon tetrachloride
Chlordane
Chlorobenzene
2,4-D
Dalapon
1,2-Dibromo-3-chloropropane (DBCP)
o-Dichlorobenzene
p-Dichlorobenzene
1,2-Dichloroethane
1,1-Dichloroethylene
cis-1,2-Dichloroethylene
trans-1,2-Dichloroethylene
Dichloromethane
1,2-Dichloropropane
Dinoseb
Dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD)
Diquat
Endothall
Endrin
Epichlorohydrin
Ethylbenzene
Ethylene dibromide
Glyphosate
Heptachlor
Heptachlor epoxide
Hexachlorobenzene
Hexachlorocyclopentadiene
Lindane
Methoxychlor
Oxamyl (Vydate)
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
Pentachlorophenol
Picloram
Simazine
Styrene
Tetrachloroethylene
Toluene
Toxaphene
2,4,5-TP (Silvex)
1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene
1,1,1-Trichloroethane
1,1,2-Trichloroethane
Trichloroethylene
Vinyl chloride
Xylenes (total)

Granted they are only allowed in VERY small amounts, but even a small amount that builds eve a little bit can cause a crash.

Hi,
As I said, I dont want to start a discution about yes or not it replace RO. I have been using it this way in each of my tanks with succes but as JasonSquared said, water is different from a region to an other. Here in the canadian arctic, we are lucky to have crystal clear water.
My main interest about the product is its use agains alga grow. As I said, my first experiments showed good results but I dont think its enough.

good night

so what your saying is, i should stop using ro/di water and just use city water with your product. isnt it best to take the impurities out of the water prior to being introduced into the system then to add another substance as a bandaid.

what benefit would a person have using your product?
will you also pay for all the corals that may perish due to your product?

_________

just one little sps frag tank with lots of goodies

This is absolutly not what I said. why should you change something that works? What I said is that I am willing to send some to someone who has a small tank and would like to make that algae experiment.
