what i did was look in the photo gallery's of other peoples tanks to get some inspiration, but theres really not much preperation you can do besides that. IMO if your getting the rock from a LFS just pic out pieces you think look interesting, and have alittle fun arranging them in your tank, see what you get you can always rearrange them.

I for one would not use the PVC pipe.
Get some semi flat peices of LR and sizes from small to med or even large.

Stack them where they will not fall over and make holes everywhere for the fish to dart in and out of.

i never used pvc pipe myself. but the book i had bought had a few types of ways to put lr. one was the wall look in the back of the tank, another was mound in the middle being all open around it, 2 smaller mounds with a figure 8 look, the other was called the lagoon look it was like a 3/4 circle wall around the tank. just some other ideas for u
