Default Orange LR

I've been working at a marina in Biscayne Bay the last two weeks. When the tides rolls out I see orange LR. the color completely covers the rock and looks amazing. i'm trying to figure out if it's a type of coraline, or something that might harm my tank. there's pieces in all sizes and i would love to add some to my tank, after i cure it. some people told me they called it "fire rock" and told me to be careful when handling it, but i don't think they're right cause when i snorkel i see the same type of color on the rocks that ive been crawling around in, but they're too big to take, what do you think? there's also hundreds of limpets and sponges, are they good for anything in an aquarium?

From what I have read on coraline it comes in all varities of colors. just that the purple is more common. With the sponges , it would be awesome to transfer to your tank just never let it touch AIR. It will start to die as soon as it is out of water. thus having huge ammonia spikes depending on how much there is.

I know exactly what your talking about b/c I work at Rickenbacker Cswy. I've seen two types of this "orange" color stuff, one is a sponge for sure and the other looks alot like coraline. I wish I could tell you for sure. Luna

I've got some orange plate looking growth. It grows like coralline.

hi mission6,that is plate algae.its usually more brown.nunch if you take it from the ocean and transport it in water there is no need to cure.the only reason to cure lr is if its been shipped out of water wrapped in newspaper like most lr is shipped.you don't really need the rock.you can scrape it off and dump the coraline in your tank.you also don't need to cure if its a new tank with no coral or fish

That's a good idea, scraping off the coraline if it is coraline. this rock needs to be cured just to make sure there's no bad stuff on it, cause it's coming out of a marina. a very busy marina. not the best water conditions. maybe not cured but quarantined.

the orange is much brighter than that plate algae, almost flourescent.

Nah, Sea Isle Marina. I work for a developer, we own it. It's to the North of the Venetion Causeway. most of the rock is right next to the causeway.
