I bought the rock from bigals
Carib Sea Reef Rock- 50 Lbs at Big Al's Online
It says it has never been bleached.

Would there be a thread on sand vs pea size coral? The LFS advised me on getting coral and I like the white sand.

This site had Tank and fuge starter supplies like live sand and other organisms and their prices seem to be really reasonable.

if its dry or been sitting on the shelf theres no need to bleach the rock, theres nothing alive on it. white sand is better than darker sand since it reflects the light back to the corals. if you want real live sand from the ocean floor Live Rock - Tampa Bay Saltwater Aquacultured Live Rock has it and you would have to pick it up at the airport. keep in mind there are alot of living creatures in the sand some you want and some you dont. so again its up to you.

I would rather have sand as pea sized crushed coral will trap too much leftover food and fish poop. I would use a combination of these sands to create a 1" sand bed:

CaribSea Aragamax Sugar-Sized Sand 30 lb (Saltwater Aquarium Supplies > Substrates > Dry Sand )

CaribSea Arag-Alive Bahama Oolite Sand 20 Lb (Saltwater Aquarium Supplies > Substrates > Live Sand )

The Arag-Alive sand contains bacteria so there's no need to buy any of that bottled stuff.

Can't you boil the rock in hot water to make sure there is no bacteria or bad things in it???

I woudl never use bleach on it cause then you can'y get all the bleach out and it coudl leach out into the tank and kill everyhting....

When I setup a new tank I am goign to buy about 80% of my rock dry off the shelf and put it in the tank. Then I am goign to get 20% LR from a good supplier that offers LR with lots of growth on it. I will mix them and let the tank setup for a few weeks... Might even add soem fish food or a small piece of raw shrimp to the tank to help the cycle happen.

No Kidding! I am cooking about 100lbs of rock in my garage as we speak. Don't know where you are getting information from but it is not correct. You need to soak it in rinse water and then put it in baking soda to neturlize the bleach but it has and does work great. No rock goes in my tank unless it's been cooked in bleach.

Cooking rock means something completely different. If I'm not mistaken, it involves keeping the rock submerged in salt water and deprived of light for several months.
