I made 3 pieces. It took about 2 full months to cure in plain water changing it once a week. I put a powerhead in it and that was it let it go. I have two pieces in my tank now that, other than the shape, look like the rest of my rock. It was fun to make and very inexpensive! I went and bought bas rock cause I didn't want to wait for more curing time. The shapes I put into the tank are flat shelf like with "feet on them. I put them into the sand touching the bottom so my engineer goby would dig under them without toppling over the rest of the rock. He seems to like them!

Cool I made mine!!

I just finished curing my homemade live rock, here's how I made it. I used 5 parts crushed oyster shell (available at a feed store as a supplement for cattle, $12 for 50 lbs) to one part portland type II/III cement. Add enough water to get the consistency of thick oatmeal. After getting it mixed up I made shapes in some damp oyster shell in a rubbermaid container, arches, shelves, etc. After placing the mix in the container I covered the structures in more damp oyster shell and then put the lid on, let it set a week and then took it out and put the structures in another rubbermaid container full of fresh water. Let it sit about a month with weekly water changes to let it cure. Very, very easy. The hardest part for me was thinking 3 dimensionaly to get the shapes I wanted. I also used 1" pvc pipe to make tunnels in the mix. After the rock is cured the pipes pull right out, leaving the tunnel.

_________

110 gallon acrylic with compact flourescent/actinic
55 gallon for sump/fuge
about 20 lbs of live rock (more to come)
ssb in tank, dsb in fuge
