When I put live rock in my sump... I would dump in my top off water, and my powerhead would blow it against my large piece of live rock... It turned white fast. IMO from the topoff water killing of the bacteria/caraline on the rock... JUST ONE OF MY EXPERIENCES>>>

Are you talking about the coralline algae turning white? If so that is usually a sign of low Ca & Mg.

light, water flow, temperature, salinity, pH, alkalinity, magnesium and calcium can be the culpits You now have to narrow it down somehow to pinpoint the problem and come up with a solution. An algae growth of micralgae can also pose a problem with other forms of algaes and corals.
