Default curing live rock without sand?

I have a new tank that I'm setting up and my live rock will be coming soon, I was going to cure it in some tubs, but I got to thinking, why can't I do it in the main tank before I put the sand in it? After the nitrates drop, I can clean up any unwanted crap and then add my sand? Or do I have to have sand for the cycle to work?

I already have a 20 that has some live rock and sand that I will be transfering after the cycle time. Should I add some of the existing sand to the tank? Will it decrease the curing time?

On my very first tank, I cured my rock with a DSB already in it. BIG MISTAKE!!! That's what Dr. Ron recommended at the time so that all of the "life" could migrate to the sandbed.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with curing inside your tank before you put your sandbed in. In fact, many people do it this way.
