Cure in Freshwater?

A friend of mine gave me about 60lbs of live rock covered with bubble alge and other stuff. I'm traveling in OK now and I have to drive back to GA at the end of this week. Right now, I have a rubbermaid container with the rock in it submerged in salt water with a powerhead and two airstones keeping it circulating. I have several questions.

1. Should I go ahead and scrub the bubble alge and any other crap off of it right now before my road trip on Thursday?

2. Once back home, can it be cured in fresh water? The friend that gave me the rock stated that his friend is curing LR in freshwater.

1. yes I would scrap off the rock of all the excess wastes that you dont want

2. Curing in fresh NO!! curing is to let the dead and dieing off orginisims finish off their decomposition. Adding freshly decomposing rock to your tank it creats ammonia and nitrate spikes in a system (although it can be done).
The freshwater will Kill off any off the good bactirea that you want the live rock for.

tangster suggests a 50/50 bleach cure to clean the rock with a good wash, check out some other threads to find out how

I just think starting of the system totally steril is the better way to go and I add the pest I want (: Not someone elses mess.. Look at the tread Buring live rock or Curing live rock ? can't recal it now ? But its always worked for myself and all who have tried it.

If you are going to keep Afercian Chiclids yes you can otherwise Nope will push carbonate's and P.H levels up to high for a community F/W tank.
