I ordered a bunch of snails from reef cleaners and I saw 1 hermit crab in there and thought, oh well, no big deal.

in a no time the thing is the biggest hermit crab in my tank... It appears to be eating algae off the live rock... It just moved into a mexican turbo snail shell... that's pretty big next to my red legged hermit crabs...

It it kind of gray and whiteish it has stripped legs...

Any idea what this puppy is or if I should yank it?

    in my tank I have:
    1 yellow tang
    1 foxface
    2 clow fish
    1 leather coral
    1 blue damsel
    1 algae blenny
    1 cleaner shrip
    1 peppermint shrip
    1 sea biscut
tons of snail and hermit cabs... mostly cerith and black turbo...
and red legged hrmits, plus this 1 weird guy...

I kind of like him but he scares me I don't know what he's capable of or if he is reef safe.

    Any idea guys?

Are you able to get a picture of it? Even with a picture some hermits can be a challenge to ID, so without one it may be hard to narrow down.

i just noticed the same crab, and I assume I got it also from reef cleaners with my snails! Its kind of a light green/grayish color with stripes down the back sides of its legs, and bug eyes so to speak??? Mine is in a white shell that it must have dug out of the sand.

I had a white legged snail accidently come with an order. I figured no biggie. He grew fast and killed a lot of my other hermits for their shells (even though shells were all over) Then one day I watched him grab hold of one of my bottow dweller fish.

That guy was bannished to my sump...until I fed it to my mantis!

Are his legs with the claws black with white spots or are they the striped ones you are talking about?

I had a hermit with black and white striped legs he harassed all the other hermits looking for a new shell and when he couldn’t fine one went after the snails, managed to kill one of them. Very aggressive I got rid of him.

I had a zebra hermit, no biggy till they get big then they will start malliciously just killing other inverts, I had video of mine kamakaze diving off the top of my rock formation grabbing a red leg on the way down then ripping it out of it's shell at the bottom of the rocks then climbing back up to the top and doing it all over again
He ended up going in a tank with an undulated trigger, can guess what happened from there lol
