    so i thought that it was illegal to harvest marine life in the keys (where i live) and i find out today that it is legal for certain species. any opinions on collecting snails hermit crabs fish or other marine life to put into my tank after if cycles fully or should it be avoided?

    any possible bad outcomes of doing this? such as ich or any other diseases?

    its possible to get unwanted parasites from anything you bring home from the ocean , you would have to QT everything before you added it to your DT

    I did that myself when I was living in Vero in the 80s. Used NSW from the beach, too. :)

    diseases, modified diseases not normally seen in the trade. Same deal with hitchhikers

    And live rock ? And urchins anemone's

    FWIW, most of these for sale in the LFS are collected in the Keys. Check the FWC and fishing regulations for bag limits. Our club has scheduled a trip to the Keys for collecting in a few weeks. Here in SW Florida we have live shelling bans that preclude collecting even hermits, but fish, anemones and some corals are fine.
