Default cleaner shrimp died

hello all i just had my first casualty in my reef tank. i purchased a regualar cleaner shrimp and after only 3 hours it was dead!!!!!!

all my readings were right on the mark.

the only thing i can think off is possibly my PH was off some from the LFS i even acclamated by putting shrimp in bucket and adding little water from my tank every half hour, was fine till after i put in main tank.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

Matt

That sucks Matt.

If died that fast...you may not have acclimated long enough. They are usually pretty durable little creatures in my experience.

Or another thing to make sure of is that you don't have any loose Cu (copper) in the tank.---- Any trouble with other inverts?

Default Same problem with blood shrimp

HI,
I may be wrong but some inverts are not very durable when it comes to PH changes and water hardness or amounts of salt contents.
I ve read somewhere that many animals need a lot of time to adjust to swings in spec grav. They need the time to adjust their fluids many petstores maintain the min amounts of salt in tanks many of our coral tanks are at the maximum levels, so drip acclimation maybe a drastic change if the swing is over 5 points. Unlike freshwater fish saltwater animals need to use their gills and a chemical like a hormone to adjust their body fluid levels to prevent shock.
I may ask my LPS at what kh is his sytem and what the spec grav, it may be smart to check the water in the bag before starting the drip,
I may go to holding tank thats very similar to the store conditions and then gradually acclimate the animal to the new tank by adding a small amount of the tank water over a longer period of time.
Its not alway the nitrites and NH3 that kill it could be KH, and spec gravitiy.
My thoughts :Halloween44:
Doug I feel your pain those pricy shrimp are so pretty and may be the best thing for any saltwater tank.

I'm not saying this is right but I don't acclimatize anything and everything I put in my tank is great. Shrimp, leathers, dragonfish. I have not lost a coral, invert or fish. Not sure why. I use to put my fish in the plastic bag in my tank for 15mins, then open the bag and let it breath, then start adding water from the tank and after an hour or sometimes 2 add the fish to the tank. All the time I can see the fish going nuts in the bag. So I tried just putting the fish right in the tank, no problems. Tried another, no problems. So now I don't acclimatize anything. Am I just lucky!!

Matt, Sorry for your loss..
We have several shrimp of different varieties in our tanks and never had a problem, well one, that darn spotted hawk.
We acclimate over 2 hours removing about 1/8 cup of water from the bag and then adding that much tank water back to the bag. You are absolutely right, djnzlab1, three of the stores we frequent keep the SG at about 1.17.....

Sorry about your loss truck but I would have to agree with djnzlab. Most stores keep their sg at the minimum since its cheaper. Inverts especially snail I think require a higher sg 1.022 and up. You may have not acclimated it enough time. I just recently acclimated a fire shrimp the same way as you but did it for about an hour. The way I acclimatize is that I dump some water out of the holding bag then I add a little bit of tank water. Every 2 mins or so I add a little more water until the water in the holding bag has doubled. Then I discard half of the water in the holding bag and do the process once more.

With inverts especially, you want to be sure that you have given enough time to acclimate the invert to be sure all is right in the bag and the water of your tank. Constant is the word to use here for the best chances of its survival. It could have been sick or dying at the pet shop you bought it at, without you knowing it.
At any rate sorry for the loss of your shrimp and unfortunately their will be more times with this end result!
Learn from it and all we can do is try to minimize our losses for the sake of our living animals.

funny that bulltrader mentioned not acclimating.i recently saw a lfs,a very good lfs going from tank to tank and picking fish up with his bare hands and gently putting them in the different tanks.they seemed just fine.i still acclimate my fish just cause its better to be safe than sorry.i'm sorry to here of your loss.by the way,i've heard people say not to put shrimp in a tank till it is very mature,6months to a yr.
