What type of hermit is this?

Apparently this guy had Bogarted some poor snail's shell at my lfs, I thought he looked very unique so I asked if I could but him. They gave him to me for $3... He warned me that he doesn't know if this hermit is completely reef safe, so I've kept a rather close eye on him; while he is extremely active (and efficient), he hasn't harmed any fish or invertebrates over the week that I've had him. I was wondering if anyone knew what type of crab he is and if he is, in fact, truly reef safe. He is approximately 3/4" - 1" in size.

Is he reef safe in a 12 g with shrooms and a feather duster?

Yes, but they will grow rather large! I have a couple in my Daughter's soft coral reef tank with no problems! Had them for over a year!

I have one! He is shedding quite often! I keep it with softies and they are doing great

I know them as left handed hermits as one claw is significantly larger than the other. I've never had a problem with them.

Just keep it supplied with larger shell or it will relive your snails of thier really fast... Got love a LFS sell you a 30ct crab for 3.00 and then not know what the hell they are even selling you.. Wounder how many ohhh say Lunar Wrasses are sold as reef safe we thin k ? (: I'd locate another LFS myself.. And consider this one lucky..

I know, he also sold me (a complete novice at the moment) a purple nudibranch and told me it was a low maintenance sea slug. He told me it would just live off of the algae for ever and that they don't require supplements to their diet. Poor guy died in less than 24 hrs. After reading up on it, I found out how ridiculously difficult it is to keep one of those, even for an expert. I also learned (the hard way) that they release harmful chemicals. Luckily I had enough leftover saltwater to quarantine my wrasse; nothing else died.

That toxin release is really way over rated it can happen if the tank is micro small But I run carbon to remove any toxins let off by corals or anything in the system.. Colts and many leathers as well release some nasty toxins to protect their space from intrusion by other corals ..Oh and Find another shop either this shop is ran by idiots or just bare faced liars either of which I'd want to deal with.

The next closest shop is 40 mins away (this one's across the street). I'll check it out though.
