Only blenny I have any experience with is my bi-color.

| mission, I believe you've a black sailfin blenny. I've one too and is just like you described. He's quite a character and has even 'attacked' my hand when i've had it in there...including a net. He leaves every other critter in the tank alone, but he does not like anything getting near his 'spot'.
I couldnt make out what you had in the first picture, it was the second one that gave it away. Mine also has those faint blue bars on his face. Sometimes they're more pronounced.

| The blennys are funny like that, I have a hairy blenny and it thinks the whole tank is his spot. Does it have a very large, (like two times the size of the rest of his body) fin on the back? In field guides that is what the sailfin blenny looks like, I have always wanted one, I think they are cool. When i see them in the LFS though they generally don't have that large sailfin. I wonder if only the atlantic variety has it. |

| Mission! Guess What?! I think I REALLY found out what blenny we have! I think it's a black combtooth blenny, not the black sailfin blenny. Look at these two links. The first one (combtooth) has the markings on the face Saltwater Aquarium Fish for Marine Aquariums: Black Combtooth Blenny
the black sailfin does not Saltwater Aquarium Fish for Marine Aquariums: Black Sailfin Blenny
the black sailfin also apparently has brown colorations...look at it's iris. the combtooth's (like mine) is black. the tail on mine sometimes appear white, then translucent. The blue bars on his face also are sometimes more visible than others... |
