Default What is the name of this coral?

I got the picture off of Google images... but that is what mine looks like, only smaller.

I bought it today from the LFS for $10, as it was a small frag/piece and want to know the name of it.

Also - can I glue this one down to a rock.... its kinda just sitting on a ledge right now, but I want to keep it in the same spot so that it holds onto to that rock.

TIA

That's a beauty. Did they know the name at the LFS?

I'm guessing you paid 10 bucks for a piece of colt coral or kenya tree coral.

I take/share a "common sense" approach.

No... its not colt or kenya - its very bright pink.

It isn't as "transparent" as the one in the photo... more like a pepto bismal color and its little protrusions are all rounded.... not frayed like a colt coral.

BTW - i have colt coral in my tank currently, so I know its nothing like those

i think what your talking about is a carnation coral(slang term) Dendronephthya)
a non-photosynthetic soft coral, and very hard to keep as they need to be fed constantly.

ive seen them around here befor for pretty cheap too, my assumption is they are very malnurished.

for only 10 bucks thou why not, its proly gonna die in the store tank anyways.

put it in low low light, like under a over hang, with med-strong random current, and needs to be feed phyto or some meaty foods, almost constantly.
this type of feeding can be bad for your tank and spoil your water quickly, so be careful.

Another reason I don't think I could buy something without knowing all the characteristics.

it happens and with how hard it is to tell some softies from the next, its easy to come home with something you did not intend on.

the pic is a carnation, a real nice one to. they are small in nature never seen one over 5''. very hard to keep. they should stay in the sea. if it starts looking bad try feeding by putting it on the bottom and cutting the bottom of a water bottle off and putting it over it and use dk's. it should be one the bottom anyway it doesnt need much light, like a sun coral.
