gerritmatton is on a distinguished road

Default who lives in a sump/spare tank

Hello guys,

I have a 50 gallon tank (build it myself). Now under my tank I still had a rather big empty space and decided to build another small closed tank under it so I had a bigger watervolume for my tank, the water flows from my main tank into the smaller tank en than trough the canisterfilter back in the maintank. I was thinking what critter can I put in this completly closed tank, to help keep ik clean? Hermits? Snails? But you have to consider the tank is standing in a dark corner, which animal doesn't mind the darker conditions?

Greetings,

GM

I'd get hermits and snails. I doubt that they'll mind the dark too much.

My turbo snails only come out at night! Weird. It kind of sucks because they are orange spotted turbo snails and their shells actually look very nice! I was just pondering this same question. I want to put something into my sump to keep it clean between the baffles...

true calisky, but the sump! do you have snails and crabs in your sump, i dont. to much flow for critters to get lost, damaged ,sucked up, clog inlets, clog outlets, and so on. makes no sense to me. if anything make a refugium out of it.

Hmm... You are right guru! All these tiny buggers can easily make your life difficult when placed in the sump.

I have a sump/fuge that I just call a sump but I suppose it's actually a refugium. I have a turbo snail, a hermit crab and 2 really small peppermint shrimp in it with a ball of cheato and some substrate/live rock in it. It's a mini tank with a light on it. Kind of my second tank and I do feed them a bit every 2 days. Just something cool to look at as feather dusters have bloomed like crazy in there.

_________

90 gallon with 26 gallon sump/refugium, 2 x 250 MH lighting, 100lbs live rock, 1 - yellow tang,1 damsel, 1 - cleaner shrimp, 1 - coral banded shrimp, 3 - emerald crabs, 2 - porcelin crabs, 6 - peppermint shrimp, 1 - green ricordia, 1 - toadstool, 1 - brittle starfish, 1 - sand sifting star, 100's baby feather dusters,Ass mushrooms, frogspawn, xenia, 1 clam,
6 - Leather coral, Green star polyps,Lime green/orange button polyps,1 huge carpet anenome,various snails/hermit crabs
