Default Sump / Fuge / Skimmer?

I was thinking about the sump I am building and I definitely want to add a skimmer at some point.

Now the basic theory in a protein skimmer is to lift all dissolved proteins into a collection cup while maximizing oxygen in the water right?

Because if thats the case, I could easily and cheaply modify the second chamber of my intake to do this task. Add an extra baffle to remove all the bubbles and purchase an over sized (1000g/hr from Home Depot) pump to function as my return pump and skimmer pump (with some creative plumbing I wouldn't even need the the bubble stone).

I am just rambling now. Can it be done, has it been done?
