Lightbulb Nano Tank bio-filter

Hello hello,
I am somewhat new to the hobby, less than a year, but have had some success with freshwater planted tanks 10 and 20gallon, and a 30g brackish: 1green spotted puffer,3 freshwater flounder, so far so good as I have learned my lesson on overstocking.
Being the "do-it-yourselfer" I am turning my 10 gallon into a nano-reef, but I want to section of part of it for a over-flow to a bio filter/chemical filter insert section, with a power-head for the return. just like the jbj does, seems simple enough to me but I have not found anyone on the net that has done this without buying the complete unit or building a sump.
