Japanese DIY site

I was *trying* to find Japanese reef sites today (I would emphasize trying, as either I don't know Japanese well enough - entirely possible, or there just aren't many) and came across a bit of a gem. This guy has a LOT of DIY projects for his aquarium. (I've noticed this theme a lot on the Japanese sites... but when a SINGLE Peppermint Shrimp is $20 from an inexpensive LFS, you'd do a lot of DIY too)
Among others, a Peltzer based water cooler: (He uses a Laptop Fan Controller to run the Peltzer - includes housing incidentally!)

There are others of course, but these are IMO the most interesting of the crew. I thought the auto powder doser was incredibly clever personally, but it still doesn't address the problem I'm looking for a solution to: How do I keep salt in the dispenser DRY, yet still be able to dispense it into a WET environment like a filler sump. (so a computer could presumably control the salt parameter on both the high and low side) My idea is to keep a brine water tank, and use a doser - for now... I just hate to think about the salt precipitation problems, or what happens if you let it go dry (shiver)

Google Translation was my image for how people would look at that.

If there's a lot of interest in any ONE particular item in this list, I'll spend some time to do a proper translation. (I've never seen a good tool that automatically translated Japanese to English and Vice Versa)

I have a translator on Firefox, it worked well on that link.

I don't know if the translator came with Firefox or the yahoo tool bar or if it was an add on but it does work.

I guess I had envy of the people posting here that they could get peppermint shrimp for $6 apiece.

LFS had some smaller ones this time at 1500 Yen for 1 or 4000 Yen for 3. With the falling price of the dollar, that's about $12 for one or $30 for 3. Not bad.

Any links that didn't work well with the translators? Still willing to do a proper translation of one of those pages if anyone is interested.

easy to breed are they could make some easy money here checked again yesterday at a different shop they wanted $45 a peice anywhere up to $300 for some shrimp... finding nemo killed this since that darned movie prices on everything sky rocketed

Amazon has a book you may be interested in if you want to sell Peppermint Shrimp though. Apparently it has advice on breeding and rearing the young as well: How To Raise & Train Your Peppermint Shrimp

I was thinking about Harlequins personally, since the price is relatively high, and the food/care is only moderately expensive. Want to get a new tank set up first tho.

I really do feel sorry when movies like Finding Nemo come out though, and people get "trend interest" in some pet. Too often it causes plunges into care giving that people aren't prepared to give, often leading to disaster, or disinterest down the road.

I once knew someone who after purchasing a pet kitten, totally lost interest in their rat. The rat ate its own feet off before dying of starvation. I heard about this later in the context of "Hey, my rat went crazy and died..."

I was ready to kill her - thankfully, she was on the other end of a telephone at the time. My friends and I wondered what was the next pet of interest going to be, as she was already losing interest in the cat last I saw of her. :mad:
