Default Dorm Fridge chillers

I know several of you have made the dorm fridge chillers, how have they performed over time? I am thinking about making one for a 55gal grow out tank but would like to know if you guys had success with them or if you found it to be a waste of time / money? I know it depends on the amount of coils for draw down, but on average how many degrees did it lower your temp?
Thanks!
