This is not my aquarium, and I had nothing do do with its creation. But I thought it was a very impressive thing. Especialy impressive because he used clear acrylic so you can see how simple the thing actualy is.
I have a reefkeeper 2 with channels to spare, I kinda wonder if something like this could be made using a maxijet 1200 modded. Looks like basicly a box you put in your tank and seal the powerhead inside.
It turns on and expells water from the box turn it off and it stops. Also seems like if it was done as a home project you could easily scale it to fit your tank needs.
Anyone with more experience know what horrible results could come from trying to create such a beast.

45 gallon all glass tank - Remora Skimmer - Aquaclear 300 - 16lbs LR - 15lbs base rock - 60lbs sand - 2x96 PC Current Orbit - 2x Maxijet 1200 - 120w VisiTherm heater
2 Clown Fish - 1 Lawnmower Bleeny - 1 Peppermint Shrimp - 1 Blue legged hermit - 3 Astrea Snails - 1 Emerald Crab (havent seen in a while)
I was thinking of trying my hand at one. A capacitor, a resistor, a rheostat knob (LED is a nice touch). I was stuck on how to plug it in, but it looks like that transformer/inverter is ready to go...
there was a lot of floaty stuff in there that didn't look like it was getting near the intake. Also, I NEVER get sick on boats or rides, but watching that would make me hurl!!!!

Did you pick all that up from looking at it?
Nice!

Thanks! Must be a transformer. I'm guessing the powerhead is AC also. This leaves the last question (why I haven't tried yet)- this guy has an overflow box to baffle the flow. I'd rather simply plug a normal pump into the controller and have that go to wall power - but - I don't want the "instant" on, so I'm looking for a way to slowly spin up the motor. I know a few devices I could rip the IC's from that would do it, but then my DIY cost goes up.
Plans and build will be posted if I figure it out.

Wow thats a wicked effect on the tank , You coulld easly tape or extern your hood to cover the wave look at the top!!!
I was wondering but the flow in the tank to me it kinda looked to be not stagnent but the same water back and forth (you can see some small particals around the corals in one shot and they dont get washed way is that what we want or a more longer/liniar flow?
that would be awsome cool looking tunze powerhead used in the vid
as for the question about using a mj mod I would highly discourage this due to the fact that they have a tendancy of not restarting after shutting off then back on so you may have issues they are great for constant on but not good for pulsing
I could see this working well with a sio powerhead or some other kind of high flow powerhead that isn't known for not restarting
very simple design of a box with a powerhead at the bottom that pushes water out the box
