DIY tank

Hey guys,

I've been thinking about trying to build a larger plywood tank at some time in the future, 150 - 200 gallons. I've spent quite a bit of time on the GARF site looking at thier plans, so here is the question. Instead of using an extensive epoxy paint to seal the wood why not just use prefabricated countertops cut to size to make the tank. It seems the laminate the countertops are covered with would work to seal the wood. Any feedback? Like I said, I'm just tossing ideas around at this time. Thanks

if the wood gets damp it will bend.most laminated counter tops are made of cheep fiber board.maybe you could laminate good quality plywood and seel the wood real well.

I read the old thread, good info. Thanks for the reply's. I'm always looking for ways to do things cheaper but maybe this is something I should just forget about or spend the money on the epoxy paint. I read another article where a guy built an 800 gallon tank out of plywood for his basement. It stayed together until it was full of water and then it split in the middle. My wife would absolutely kill me! If anybody here has actually done this succesfully let me know, jb63beetle@yahoo.com. I'd like to see some pics of comstruction, setup, and the finished product. i've seen many wooden tanks.i just don'nt see why make one when you can have a safe strong long lasting glass or acrylic tank for the same cost or maybe a bit more.now the stand i would deffinately make.many of those commercial stands are junk and few are made that can house a decent size sump.
