Interesting. I like the idea of a DYI skimmer but most plans I see are more involved than I want to get and not much less expensive than just buying one.

110 gallon acrylic with compact flourescent/actinic
55 gallon for sump/fuge
about 120 lbs of live rock (more to come)

Hey reefguru, thats really cool but I dont think a square design is functional. All the skimmers I have ever seen have been round(cylinder) shape. But if you can pull it off, more power to you!

google DIY protein skimmer and look at some that are out there. most are tubes since people dont like working with acrylic.

heres my idea:
external pump
the main chamber will be 10x10x18 with 3 needle wheel pumps
the neck would be 4x4x6
the collection cup would have a 1" clearance from the top of the neck

ive got so many extra parts laying around the garage from other tanks in the past that it would be cheaper for me to build one

Been build very effective square skimmers for years. Latest one. My new Skimmer

My prototype

Working like a champ.

Square skimmers have many advantages over round. But their is some playing that you have to do. I for one use a round bubble plate diffuser to solve the turbulence problem. People mostly dont do square because of the extra work and the fact with prices being what they are now the round material is not the more expensive choice. Really when it comes to chamber volume you can't beat square.

FWIW the round design isn't even the best. For that look at the cone or volcano shaped skimmers. They blow everything else away. If I was smarter and could figure out the cuts, I would make a flat planned pyramid skimmer.
