Btw i didnt mean to doubt your ability to keep a blue ring, its frustrating for me as someone who would really like to keep an octo that the smallest commeonly available species is also potentially deadly and that other than the cold water species they live for such a short period of time. I havent been able to bring myself to try one simply because i know i'll get attached and i know i'll be crushed if/when the time comes that is passes. I have fish that have lived to be 80 in captivity and the idea of going to the extreme the other way seems odd to me.

Now if they could be bred on the other hand then i'd give it a shot . I know they've laid eggs but i havent ran into anyone thats managed to raise more than one maybe two of the babies.

I wonder if no one has bothered to try seriously at it..

Btw that is an awesome tank set up for them one. I was looking to covert a 35 gallon acrylic that i have for an octo but i dont try my over flows to be octo proof lol.

Jason

I hope the little fellow settles in soon.

Will probably eat during the night when lights are out after it settles in. Water quality has got to be above and beyond that for anemones. Use chemical filtration to remove ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and phosphates or it won't last long.
I've tried to keep them in the past and found they will not tolerate anything but excellent water quality. They won't eat, then will perish within a few weeks. Hope you don't have that mercury temp gage where the octo could get to it and possibly break it.
Awesome. Please keep us posted on how it is doing. Nice DIY project. Hope you get some more LR in there.

I would watch out with blue rings. If you get stung by one of those then chance are slim that you will survive. A very dangerous predator to have, however only IMO. I would look at something more like a Sea Goblin or the like as opposed to a Blue-Ring, as I dont think that they are as dangerous.

_________

135 Gallon Reef Tank

1x Pink-Tail Triggerfish
1x Blue or Hippo Tang
1x Purple Dottyback
2x Ocellaris Clownfish
1x Blue/Green Reef Chromis
1x Bullethead Wrasse
2x Harkwick's Wrasse

75 Gallon Reef Tank

1x Blue/Green Reef Chromis
2x Pink Skunk Clownfish
1x Koran Angel
1x Tail Ring Tang
1x Yellow Assesor
1x Picasso Triggerfish
1x Royal Dottyback
1x Yellow Tang
2x Firefish

Total - One Awesome Looking Display!!

Looks increadible, although they are very smart creatures and should be chalanged. I heard that they can squeze through holes 1/4 their head size. this is one of the things that an octo can do that fish can't, Learn Tricks.

I see you have been battered with how dangerous the blue ring is. Understand that a blue ring sting doesn't give you much time to live. it will paralize you before you can call for help so be very carefull and make sure you are never alone and that the people around you know exactly what this creature can do and how to help you if the worst happens.

If you are interested in totaly mundane wierd colourful creatures then look no further than a cutlefish, they are incredible for color since they can change pigmentation to adapt to their environment. I don't know if its possible to keep but this is what i would try to have if i was to go in this direction.

Regardless Good Luck With the one you have.

You could also try squid if you are looking for a different approach. They aren ot too hard to find, weird, beautiful and great looking. They will swim around changing colours and I could nto find a reason why they would not be suitable for a fish tank.

Just my 2 cents.

Here's a random question: are squid and/or cuttlefish reef safe and why or why not?

They're not considered safe because they will eat motile inverts. I'm not so sure that they're not "reef" safe though because I've never heard of them disturbing sessile inverts.

just make sure you have a very tight seal on the tank....they are renowned escape artists.....and you may want to upgrade your skimmer, when an octopus feeds and urinates, it will significantly foul the water. i'm sure you already knew these facts though...

as for the blue ring...i would never think about it or suggest it. there is no antivenin available and yes....you would die.
