| oh the horror, the horror!!! I don't know how much can be done since the company was bought out and is now privately owned. A petition can be passed around and sent to petco HQ, but how it will be taken is unpredictable. |

| i think everyone should send emails to petco complaining and boycotting the store.if they get enough emails they will start making changes.its a corp and they get scared of boycotts. |

| Don't be so sure nothing can be done. PETA (as much as I hate PETA). Anyone notice the large parrots are missing from Petco? PETA dropped a lawsuit if Petco stopped selling large parrots. We have 2 large parrots - one adopted - and there is a huge problem with neglected parrots as everyone knows Petco isn't the place for accurate information on exotic pets such as saltwater life and parrots.
I also am guilty on buying a powder blue tang there -- he looked spotless and slowly developed ick which I only fought with garlic and nutritious food along with good water parameters. He was fighing it off on his own (the yellow tang in the tank never got any) and doing great until one of the small scuffs he and the yellow tang had made him shoot behind some rock and cut his side. From there what I think was a bacterial/fungus infection took him in about a day and a half.
No more Petco fish for me either and no their animals don't come first. I heard Petco workers talking at a Taco Bell one time wanting to bring an animal to a vet and the manager refused because it was a 15.00 animal which died that next day.
The other big problem is once ick is introduced we all know how hard it is to get rid of --- the infected tanks get new (probably mostly healthy) fish every week so the ick always has something stressed to attach to. That and their systems are all running on the same water usually. Why can't they copper blast them since they really don't carry corals?
We have an independent place that owns two stores -- one shares water throughout the tanks and they went downhill REALLY fast. The other one is all independent tanks and they are always nice, or infection is kept to one tank and treated.
Ok, I'm done ranting and buying stuff at Petco I can get elsewhere

| There has been reef clubs banned from petco's before... I think it was NARK that got banned recently, all they did was volunteer to take care of their saltwater tanks. They emailed corp. petco, and that was the response from them. Its all about the money with them. |

jv3679 | I agree...PETCO management should be informed of any abuse of livestock they are selling. I think they would like and need to know.
They do provide a valuable service to pet owners in community.
There is no way they can make money in the long run on marine animals if they abuse their stock so badly before selling...and unfortunately to people who have little clue to keeping alive anyway after getting home, which concerns me even more.
Our local PETCO stopped selling SW fish for just this reason.
But this is a problem all LFS's have to face.
I would first report the abuse of any animal being sold to public first to LFS management...then the SPCA.

| My local petco is not a terrible place, as the aquatics department is taken care of by a fellow reefer (who has a 75g reef) and is a member of reefcentral. An oh yes my petco carries corals, but only zoas. Im not defending PETCO but it isnt just the corporations negligence, but their choice of employees. For example, the manager at my petco hired the Reefer only because he had a reef, whilst many petcos will hire anyone as long as they can lower wages (but do remember that the discount does get carried to you).
Its not that we need to destroy petco, but rather "reform" it by petitioning that they have trained employees instead of employees told to refer to the "sheet" (a paper that many major pet stores such as petco and even general stores such as walmart use that tells employees how to maintain fish in about 2 paragraphs).

| its not the employees,it comes from hi up.my girlfriend worked there a couple months and there was nothing she could do to change vanything.all fish have 10 gallon tanks.if they have a bunch of the same kind of fish, they all go in the same tank together.does'nt matter if their damsels or tangs.then they kill each other off to make room.the whole wall was run by one tidepole sump with nothing but a biowheel in it.once a month they ran a hang on back canister filter with carbon in it for 2 hours then removed it.all fish were fed algae on clips whether damsels or puffers, end of story.they had red lavarock in sw tanks to save money.their idea was the fish would be sold before the lava rock could poison them to death.if you have any problems with this you can go work the front cash register till its time to remove the dead fish at the end of the day.actually maybe we won't be able to schedule you to work tomorrow.thats what you can expect at petco in cranberry twp.pa.at least it was when she worked there last yr.now thats not a employee neglecting the fish.that is store policy coming from way up.no excuses.i don't expect i can get in trouble for saying this cause its fact.no point in disputing it cause i saw it.basically its a waste of time doing petitions or calls an stuff.i would'nt waste my time
