| When and How much? Hello all, hope you had a great weekend. I have a few questions...
I have had my system running since Nov 06, I still have a problem of when to add kalk. Do I also need to worry about the magnesium levels? Does the 10% water changes add these elements? I am using "Kent Essential Elements" following the directions on the bottle...My calcium levels are always good...and lots of coralline growth. I know I need more LR, plan to get more in a week or so...Thanks
PS sorry for the double thread about the large tank ken _________ 40g display, 15g sump, 10g fuge, coralife super skimmer, 40lbs seaflor special, 5lbs sugar fine LS, 25lbs LR(fiji, and gulf of mexico) 265watt PC with 2 50/50 10k/6.7k daylight, 2 50/50 420nm/460nm actinic, DIY moonlites, DIY auto top off, 32g reserve RO/DI, DIY dosers, research... |

| If your tank has been going since '06, Tufa Rock will quickly change to "live rock" in your tank. My Tufa has been in my tank for 4 months now. Another month or so and you will not be able to tell the difference from it and my live rock. I do not currently add kalk so I cant help you there. But I am always on a budget with my tank so the tufa saved me some $$$$. Plus your tank wont get the infamous ammonia spike from adding more LR. _________ -R 2 maroon clowns, 3 bubble tip anemones, 3 emerald crabs, 1 coral banded shrimp, 12 astrea snails, 4 mexican turbo snails, 2 ricordia yuma, 2 purple mushroom ricordia, 2 small zoanthid frags, 8 red legged hermits, 1 flame scallop, 1 watchman goby, gonoporia, sun ployps, yellow polyps, star polyps, galaxea 29g bowfront, 10g sump, 20g fuge, 250W MH, 6 blue LED, 6 white LED, 2 65w power compact Actinic, DIY overflow / skimmer The Weather Is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful |

| I'm not sure you should be adding kalk at all. What kind of corals are you keeping in this tank?
As for magnesium, it is needed to keep calcium and alkalinity from fighting each other so yes, you do need to monitor those levels and supplement if needed. |

From your tank pictures and your sig I don't see anything that is going to suck up great quantities of calcium. Your water changes should suffice.
Here is a link for calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity levels, problems and solutions. Chemistry and the Aquarium
Enjoy,
