| Spent year and a half struggling with a Cu problem in tank, REPOST
As long as we are discussing new forums/threads, I for one would like to see a " lessons learned" forum...a one stop place where Reef "wisdom" can be collected, saved and read for all posters... Am sure all of us (at least once or twice ) have made large (and costly) errors that should be shared for all.
(i.e. "the moral of the story is...")
Of course while they might include some embarasment - It might save a lot of grief to others.
Example... "Be aware of "cheap pond pumps" WATCH OUT for those fresh water pond pumps...greatest mistake I ever made was getting a "cheap" one when I was first starting out.
For the next year or so I battled a terrible copper problem...every time I got it under control, it came back with a vengence...killing off every invert and all LR in tank...almost gave up hobby --- in fact I hated it for a while.
Finally discovered my "cheap" pump had a brass sleeve/fitting in it that was leaching copper into my tank.
I could have bought a couple dozen of the best pumps on the market for all the $$$ I spent on inverts and Cu removing remedies. BE CAREFUL! _________ AG "125," AquaC EV 180, 30 gal sump, "SCWD", 80 lbs LR, CoralSeaLife "Moonlite" Hood, PFO 250W HQI Mini-Pendant (SPS HQI 14000k bulb)
12 Gallon NanoCube - 24w stock PC 50/50 light "...nothing good ever happens fast in a reef tank, only bad things happen fast..."
- MIKE PALLETTA - (2008 Reef log) ("OmarD"/"Scott") |

| I had some kind of flash fire in my sump...I almost didn't spend the night a my place that night and around 5am my girlfriend wakes me up (she said it sounded like someone was in my living room) I got out of bed an as soon as I walked out I see a bright light coming from the stand doors...I was still in a fog as I opened the doors and turned off the main switch, My pump had some kind of cut from rubbing on something and was flaming up. it was a good thing I was home that night and no one got hurt. now I use a GFCI and a ground probe on any tank I setup. |
