Default What filter substrate in Reef/Refugium

Fairly new reef tank with refugium. Lots of little things (pods?) growing in the refugium. Literature says these are good when sucked into the main tank. QUESTION - Don't they then get trapped in the filter bag? Do most reef/refugium tanks use filter bags on the return water?
ANOTHER QUESTION: When I feed Plankton should I shut off the skimmer? (ASM G-3). Thanks for any help

Once again, your tank. If it was mine I would get rid of the filter bag.

I don't use a filter bag on my return.
I figure if it makes it through the pump it's ok for the tank.

i agree if it handles the bubble traps and makes it through the return pump let it pass to the tank. this works well for me since i am circulating pods to my ever hungry mandarins from the refugium. as far as turning off the skimmer i dont. i try to target feed and then let the rest circulate.
