What is this?

My mother was visiting and ask me what this is, and I could not answer her. This was one of the first things to start growing on my live rock almost two years ago. It started looking like a small cactus and now is about three inches tall. Any clue as I am clueless?

you know im stumped, is it hard or soft could be a number of things, and things grow a bit different in our systems than in the wild

It is hardm with little brisstled, does not have a clean pattern in its growth. I will get a better pic tomorrow when my lights are on.

Have you seen any polyps on it,

do you see any polyps on it at night or day or both?

it looks like its starting to branch out, im still not sure

this is going to drive me nuts, good thing im playing golf sunday, might keep my mind of it for a bit

No luck on a better pic, it actually looks better under the blue light. No on the Poylps. It looks like it has little hairs sticking out of it.
