| Water Turnover What is considered total water turnover?
The amount of water that is actually being circulated from the overflow and the return, or do I take into consideration the water that is being circulated in the display tank by PHs and other devices?
I know there is an easy answer but I've seen conflicting opinions all over the place.

| Re: Water Turnover Drew, I have always thought that total turnover includes all water movement sources in the tank.

| Re: Water Turnover Scott,
I have read that. Then I wonder if the water that is just being moved from one side of the tank to the other is actually considered turnover. Dumb question, I know, but still a confusing issue.
If I have 600-700GPH being cycled through the sump back into the display and I add two MJ1200s into the display, am I creating an additional 500-600GPH of turnover? Or am I just creating water movement, which albeit is also essential, but it seems like they are two different things?
Thanks for the reply [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

| Re: Water Turnover Drew,
I look at the turnover rate as being the total amount of water being processed in the display tank through all movement sources (return pump, Power heads, closed loop pump, canister filters....etc). If you are looking at the filtration rate of return pump, overflow and sump, I think that is different in every system. You are looking to move water through the sump at a rate that will not cause micro bubbles to the return pump. But some rates will be slower if you are running to a refugium or remote dsb. If you do not have a sump/OVF, you still have to filter water in some way and produce enough flow for your inhabitants. I hope I am making sense.....lol. This is the way I am viewing turnover rate. Let me know what you think.

Yup the GPH of your return pumps and your power heads are all considered in you turn over rate. The Turn over is just the amount of water being circulated in your system.
I have 2 mag 7 pumps in my sump with 3 feet of head so each pump has a flow rate of 500 GPH plus I have 3 *Maxi-Jet 1200 powerheads with a flow rate of 295 gph at 0 head
so I have a flow rate total of 1885 gph *I have a 75 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump so I figure allowing for the sand bed and Live rock I have Approximately 70 gallons of water so
1885 / 70 = an approximate *turn over rate of 26.93 times per hour ...................... *John |

| Re: Water Turnover Thanks Fletch and SZ...so what y'all are sayin' is that if I add a cannister filter to the sump that has a GPH rate of 300 then I am adding that to the sum total of the return pump, the PHs and the skimmer pump.
In other words when I build the aqueduct from my house to the Pacific Ocean and use it as my biological filter I can then add that water flow amount into the sum total of water turnover. [smiley=biglaugh.gif]

You were thinking about this too?
Must be the California thing.
Water flow is a weird thing. I started out going by numbers (10 x volume), then I found myself adjusting to 'look.' In other words, I kept adding/adjusting it until it looked right. |

| Re: Water Turnover I am a trunover freak. In my nano cube i've got a rio for the main pump (not sure on size) and 3 mini PH's that each push between 100-150 Gph hooked up to a wavemaker(if they were always all on it would be a bladless blender...). Im my micro tabk (5 gals) i just put in 2 tiny tiny PH's (bout 50 GPH each max) and a power strip type wavemaker. _________ Yes, tiny has an 11" legspan...... |

| Re: Water Turnover Wow! (BTW, saw your nano pics yesterday, looks nice! )
I've found that there is a thing as too much current - I initially had my tunze aimed right at my Acropora and the polyps wouldn't extend so I had to divert it. My Bird's Nest however seems to love strong current. |

| Re: Water Turnover Yeah, ditto, nice tank Splender [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]
Sounds like a tornado in a tank!!!
I definitely do a lot of pointing PHs in different directions just to see what they will do. Still haven't gotten to the wavemaker but the tank is young and time will tell!!
