| too much flow? Hey, i have just begun to set up my 55 and was wondering if you guys thought that having three maxi jet 1200, about 300 gph, is too much. I have one as a power head, and one on my protein skimmer as a pump. I also have a hob mechanical filter, although I don't know the gph on that, I would guess it's around 100. If I add another maxi 1200 as a power head, do you think that will be too much flow for most corals and fish? My total flow will be about 1000 gph if I add the other maxi jet, if not it will be about 700 gph. Thanks

| Nope, 3 maxi 1200's in a 55 should be fine. Get you a wavemaker to plug them into and you'll be in business... _________ Kris

| id add another one, u are only turning the tanks volume over around 19 times an hour. My 90 is turning over around 25 times an hour and im actually gonna head out for another pump today cause im seeing some dead spots. Id get another maxi jet 1200, keep that detrius suspended so your filters can get it. |

| I would save yourself a bunch of money and buy one Maxijet 1200 with the impeller mod kit. Advertises for 2000 gph and I believe it! I have one in my 55 and that would calculate to be "turning over" 37X per hour and that isn't including my HOB filter or HOB skimmer!! Check this out: Maxijet: Premium Aquatics Maxijet 1200 - $19.99, Sure Flow 1600 kit - $14.99 = $34.98 for 2,000+GPH flow! You can't beat it for the price! IMO I would go with one of these, they are tricky to position in just the right spot without creating a hurricane in your tank but it can be done and the reward is great!! Let us know what you decided, but I wouldn't waste money and "junk up" your tank with a bunch of powerheads. Buy a smaller one for the skimmer and you will be golden! _________ 55 gallon slowly growing reef aquarium, 85 lbs. live rock, 2 1/2" sandbed, 1 False Percula Clown, 1 Sixline Wrasse, 1 Mandarin Goby, Tetratec PF500 filter, 2 110 watt URI Super Actinic VHO actinics, 2 250 watt metal halides with Reef Optix 2 reflectors powered by Blue Wave 3 ballast, born 1/3/08 My Tank Thread My Tank Video |
