| plants i picked up a peice of live rock a while ago that had a cool looking fern type of plant on it. now it has grown pretty big and is kind of starting to shade some of my polyps. the question i have is can i cut the plant and move it somewhere else and how would i do it?

| Re: plants You said it looks like a fern? If so then the blades must look like feathers on a bird. If so than you my have one of to types of macroalgae. Caulerpa ashmeadii- Feathery blades, young shoots are light green in color but darken when they get older. Caulerpa mexicana- Blades are also feather like, but are smaller and more compact. The blades are flattened and not as broad as Caulerpa ashmeadii.
As with just about any type of macro, you should be able to cut it and rubber-band it to a different piece of liverock. Hope this helps out.

| Re: plants Here is a good link with plenty of pictures. http://www.liveplants.gulf-coast.net/ If it is some type of Caulerpa You can cut it, break it, smash it and it will grow back eventually cause it's pretty hardy stuff. If it is something else... I guess it depends on how green your thumb is

| Re: plants cool birdlady. and it really doesnt look or feel like algae its a plant of some sort.. talked about it to the guy at my LFS and he didnt know what it was either.

No probs :-)
Probably the only true plant that grows totally submerged in the ocean is sea grass, as far as I know everthing else is algae of one sort or another.
