Default nitrate

I have a tank that has been setup for 1.5 years but nitrate stays about 40ppm. Yes I do water changes about 15 to 20 gallons a month.ammonia 0 nitrate 0 Ph 8.4 hardness 425 buffering capacity 300 using mardel test strips.I have a small load on the tank only 5 fish snails crabs ect.Thinking of a sump with refugium or maybe a skimmer would like to build sump from old 55 gal tank with diy plans that I have. What do you guys think?????

40ppm is not that high if it stays consistant. Having said that a 'fug' or sump is always a good thing to have as is will instantly give you more water volume, a place to grow some macros and pods and stuff :-)

Exactly as jhon said, nitrate fluctuations are what leads to problems to a certain degree. SKimmers and fuges are awesome.....but ild research the fuge idea in detail before starting one.
