Default need a new quiet submersable pump

I'm in the market for a new submersable pump to replace my rio 3100. It is going to be used in a sump to drive my protein skimmer.

qualifications:
1. Must be quiet
2. relatively small in size
3. output at least 950 gph.

I'm leaning towards a mag 9.5 because I already own a mag 18 and love it.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Quiet One (Pentair Aquatics)makes a good pump. I'm currently using a quiet One 3000 for my Skimmer (780GPH). They are very quiet and a little less expensive than MAGS.

I also love Mags!!! [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

Which skimmer do you use. I use the Aqua C EV 180 and they give a list of pumps that they reccomend. One of the ones they listed and which i have is the Mag 7. You might look in your skimmer lit and see what they find works best with their skimmer.

I have the Red Sea Classic Berlin Skimmer, which alot of people on this board frown upon. But I have also spoken to some others who like it. Red Sea recommends a rio 2500, but I have also heard that these skimmers work better if you overdrive them with a pump in the range of 900 gph. I have a rio 3100 on it now and it works good, but the noise is making me switch the pump out.

Thanks

I've been happy with my mag products and they have been quite. I've heard enough horror stories about rio that I wouldnlt want to use one.

I once heard someone suggest putting a rubber matting down on the floor of the sump to put your pump on . This seems to help a little with the noise. I haven't done it yet as noise has not really been an issue.

I'm working on a skimmer design based on the Berlin Red Sea Classic. I'll let you know how it comes out.

I got my Quiet One at petsolutions.com for about $45. I think aquatictech.com has them also. As of yet I haven't found the input filter for them (critter blocker) but right now I am not having that problem with the exception of one overly playful peppermint shrimp that likes to go for rides down the overflow and into the refugium. I put a screen in the overflow and now I find him (or her??) in the front of the overflow. I think it likes to bug me!!!

Saw a story about a RIO freezing up and filling this poor guys tank with the motor shavings and parts such that the tank had to be dismantled. I use the RIOs for my salt mixer and the auto top off and not much else. I even switched my CD from a RIO to a MJ microjet 606. It works great and I feel better about it being in my sump.

Well, I don't want to start bashing RIO pumps because I myself have never had any problems with them except for this particular application being noisey. I worked at a petshop for 9 years ( family owned ) and we sold RIO's and never had a single issue that I can recall in both fresh and salt applications.

Anyways.....I'm leaning towards the mag 9.5 I can pick one up for $63.00.

I don't mean to bash either 'cause I haven't personnally had any problems except for that they are noisy. I noticed that RIO does have a new pump out with ceramic shaft bearings...sounds like they are upgrading some of their products.

Also, bigalsonline.com has the mag 9.5 for $59.99 and their shipping is usually pretty reasonable if your other source is out of stock or something.
